More surprises in store as stagnating Big Four fall back into the pack | Kevin McCarra
guardian.co.uk Oct 05 2009 19:10
A levelling down of the Premier League`s dominant clubs does not mean they are spent forces in Europe, but it does make for a season of surprising resultsManchester United were not at their best on Saturday, but their manager was in peak form. His flair in conjuring up a diversionary manoeuvre is unsurpassed. Only Sir Alex Ferguson could have devised a new way of deploring the referee. Alan Wiley, who had conducted himself fairly well in the 2-2 draw with Sunderland, was angered and amazed to hear his stamina derided. This, of course, was artfully displaced rage and Ferguson`s true anger would have been trained on the players in the privacy of the dressing room. Few would have quibbled if the visitors had won instead of thwarting themselves with Anton Ferdinand`s own goal in stoppage time.

EPL Review: Chelsea Stuff Liverpool, Arsenal Get Six, Spurs Get 12, and Hull!
bleacherreport.com Oct 05 2009 17:42
Week eight of the EPL season doubled the amount of draws we`ve had so far. Didier Drogba took Jamie Carragher apart, Arsenal scored six against Blackburn, Spurs brought their tally of goalscorers this season to 12, and Hull pulled off a massively needed win against Wigan. Portsmouth...in the midst of their 16th takeover this season and without a point from the first seven games, travelled to Molineaux in a relegation six pointer. French youngster Yebda scored the only goal of the game to give Pompey and Paul Hart a deserved first win. Mick McCarthy summed it up well after the game, "I know Paul Hart well, but I`m not happy for him. I can`t be. I wanted to heap more misery on him today. Sympathy is in short supply here..." Manchester United scored in injury time for the third time
Chelsea have to keep beating the big teams to stay top, says Didier Drogba

• Drogba believes Chelsea have learned lessons from last year• Striker says team have a new attitude after Wigan defeatDidier Drogba has admitted Chelsea`s players have learned their lessons from their stuttering displays last season against the rest of the top four and have targeted victories in their duels with Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal as key to the success of their title challenge.Chelsea won only one of their six games against their biggest rivals last term, beating Arsenal 4-1 in the latter weeks of the campaign when the title already felt out of reach, but at Stamford Bridge on Sunday they laid down a marker for this season with a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in which Drogba created the goals for Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda. The Londoners enter the internation

Carlo Ancelotti reveals his not-so-secret plan to beat Liverpool: Stop Steven Gerrard
guardian.co.uk Oct 05 2009 16:12
The Chelsea manager put the squeeze on the captain to dent Liverpool`s league hopesCarlo Ancelotti was refreshingly open on the detail that corrected Chelsea`s league campaign at the first time of asking on Sunday. The pearl from a double Champions League winning coach paid £3m a year to replicate that success at Stamford Bridge? Stop Steven Gerrard; stop Liverpool. Many adopt this obvious tactic but few succeed, and they are usually the managers blessed with the calibre of players at Ancelotti`s disposal. Most end up ruing the realisation that Liverpool are not a one- or two-man team, but that will not console Rafael BenÃtez, having witnessed his captain cast adrift once again this season and his team in danger of following suit in the Premier League. This will be a long, dispiriting int

Blues Down Reds at The Bridge, Chelsea Win 2-0: Player Ratings
bleacherreport.com Oct 05 2009 13:24
A spirited second half performance saw Chelsea beat Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. French duo Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda were on target. The first half saw chances limited for both sides, and the goalkeepers at both ends of the pitch didn`t have much to do. Neither side came up with too many eye-catching moments. The second half was dominated by Chelsea, and they were rewarded in the 59th minute, when Anelka put them in the lead. Malouda, in the first minute of injury time, doubled the lead with an easy tap-in. Here is how I rated the Chelsea players on their performance: Chelsea Hilario - 6.5 Didn`t have a lot to do, since the Liverpool attack did not cause much trouble. He made impressive saves on the few occasions when tested. Branislav Ivanovic - 6.5 He definitely isn`

James Richardson is joined in the pod by James Dart, John Ashdown, and Paul Doyle to look at the big issues thrown up by the weekend`s results. We start at Stamford Bridge, where there was nothing Hilário-us about Chelsea`s performance as they beat Liverpool 2-0. Are Carlo Ancelotti`s Blues back to their ruthless, efficient best? How many more defeats can Liverpool afford this season? And if Alberto Aquilani is the answer - what question is Rafael BenÃtez asking? From there, we move further down the Big Four, where Arsenal scored six for the second time this season. Can they perform that well against a genuine title rival?Outside the Premier League, it`s now 11 games without a win for Roy Keane at Ipswich. Meanwhile, we ask you to please have a heart for poor old Darlington, who`ve named S
