Given that he was handicapped by a win, away to Apoel Nicosia, Carlo Ancelotti did well to deplore the Chelsea display with such feeling. There is no doubting which man is in the greater difficulty – a loss for the visitors would be a third in a mere eight league fixtures. Bottom of the league with zero points, so impoverished that they cannot even pay wages to their players and now having to deal with their owner, Sulaiman al-Fahim, being in hospital, Portsmouth`s supporters must be wondering when the misery will end. Old Trafford, where they have not won since 1989, is famously one of Tottenham`s great hoodoo grounds. But there is another part of Greater Manchester where Spurs come regularly and spectacularly to grief – the Reebok, where they have never won in the Premier League. Jermain Defoe`s broken hand, sustained in the 5-0 rout of Burnley last Saturday, could force Harry Redknapp to play Peter Crouch up front, although given Bolton`s physical game, the Tottenham manager might have done that anyway. Aston Villa face quite a challenge to repeat last season`s top-six finish since clubs such as Tottenham and, in particular, Manchester City have upgraded their squads. Martin O`Neill`s side had been looking quite effective in the league, winning three matches in a row while keeping a clean sheet, but doubts about their defence were reawakened by the 2-1 loss to Blackburn. Phil Brown desperately requires a win, having managed one this season, leaving Hull second-bottom on four points from seven games and looking in danger of suffering second season syndrome. Liverpool`s 6-1 hammering of them last Saturday was hardly the loss-with-honour the usually effervescent Brown could have drawn sustenance from ahead of Wigan`s visit. Roberto Martínez, meanwhile, has the fillip of guiding the Latics to a first ever triumph over a big four club – Chelsea`s deserved 3-1 defeat – last time out. Arsene Wenger: A 13-Gun Salute! bleacherreport.com Oct 02 2009 09:31
Alright, so I might have previously been a little harsh on him. But yesterday, as he walked out of Arsenal`s training ground for the 4,750th time (that`s if you include summer holidays and international breaks, which, let`s face it, no one would put past him), thus ensuring he has spent more days at the helm of Arsenal Football Club than any other boss, it is fair to say that all the recent mistakes (and a shed load of bad luck along the way) must be put behind to one side, saluting a true genius of the game. A true ambassador for the game. A man who has truly changed the face of the sport as a whole, and who has changed the face of Arsenal to the world. I say all this without even taking a moment to highlight his footballing achievements. The Doubles he has won, or going 49 league matches

Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen: A New Breed of Attacking Libero bleacherreport.com Oct 02 2009 01:59
I published an article on Arsenal`s Thomas Vermaelen about three months ago before he was officially signed by the club. In that article, I`ve outlined pretty much all you need to know about the young Belgian. Even back then, there were several question marks regarding his size, his readiness to play for Arsenal and in a physical league like the English premiership. Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams, after watching him on several occasions, advised Arsene Wenger not to sign Vermaelen. Speaking to Setanta he said:"I think Thomas is a very good player but i don`t think he`s ready for Arsenal.""I don`t think the punters at Arsenal would like another small one." Wenger has been monitoring the player for a few years, and after receiving several positive reports from his chie

Arsene Wenger: The Billy Beane of Football? bleacherreport.com Oct 02 2009 00:32
I have just finished reading Moneyball by Michael Lewis and I have made a couple observations: a) the book is great, b) Billy Beane is great, c) there are some striking similarities between aforementioned Billy Beane and Arsene Wenger. Speaking of Wenger, he has just become the Gunners longest serving manager. A very good excuse to write an article. For those unfamiliar with the book or Billy Beane, the book explores how a MLB GM (Beane) tries to build competitive teams on a relatively low budget. Sounds familiar? Both men approach the game or rather recruitment of new talent in similar fashion—going for what/who the (transfer)market undervalues. Because i am not really knowledgeable about Baseball I will just give examples for the football side of things. One striking example for Wenger
